Fire Prevention

MAKE EVERY WEEK FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

The New Hackensack Fire District’s Fire Prevention Bureau spreads the fire safety message in many different ways. It is committed to spreading the word about not just fire safety, but safety in general to the community. If you are interested in having the Fire Prevention Bureau do a talk for your group, give your group a tour of the Fire House, attend a birthday party, or just have questions, Contact the Fire Prevention Bureau at (845) 297-3897.

Fire Awareness/Open House (always in the month of October each year)

Through annual Fire Awareness and Open House at the New Hackensack Fire Station, many subjects of safety are covered and also demonstrated. Adults as well as children can all participate in the different mini seminars and games, and there are various exhibits from the history of the fire company to our fire apparatus.

The Fire Safety Trailer is available upon request for any event. The Fire Safety Trailer is our tool for providing safety education via the use of a model home. Complete with a kitchen, living room, and bedroom, the trailer assists the prevention team with discussing safety in the kitchen, practicing Exit Drills in the Home (EDITH), crawling in smoke, and checking doors for heat. The trailer is designed with heated doors, and "special plumbing" to fill the unit with fake smoke. It has many other attributes all designed to discuss safety.

Sparky and Pumper Robot are available upon request for any event. With Old Engine One, "The Talking Fire Engine" being such a hit with kids, the Bureau now has a robotic friend to help spread the word about fire prevention. Along with Sparky the Fire Dog, Sparky and Pumper will accompany firefighters to most events, including school visits, club meetings, and birthday parties.
Sparky the Fire Dog (available upon request for any event) Our mascot, this 6 foot dog is a favorite of the kids. He accompanies firefighters to most of the child age events.

Babysitting Course

Each year, New Hackensack hosts a babysitting course to teach babysitters the skills necessary to handle caring for a child, from playing and feeding tips, to learning some basic first aid. Starting in 2005, the course certified attendees in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The 8 hour class is free and runs for one Saturday & Sunday in April, (unless otherwise posted). Call (845) 297-3897 for dates of the next course and to get a permission slip to attend. Ask for Assistant Chief Valentin, Director of the New Hackensack Fire Prevention Bureau.

Red Lights.gif

RED and WHITE LIGHTS, and Sirens are used by FIRE TRUCKS, FIRE CHIEFS, AMBULANCES, MEDICS and POLICE VEHICLES. Some Police Vehicles also have Blue Lights on them in addition to Red Lights. When these vehicles approach you with flashing lights and sirens sounding, you must pull over and stop immediately and safely, and let them pass. That is the LAW. The VEHICLE and TRAFFIC LAW states that you have to yield the RIGHT OF WAY to All Emergency Vehicles when their Red Lights are flashing and sirens are sounding.
